Race on Broadway

I was lucky enough to get relatively cheap tickets to Race on Broadway. I went to undergrad with one of the stars, Kerry Washington, and our alma mater, George Washington University, got some cheap tickets and we got a reception and Q & A with Kerry before the show. It was a fabulous opportunity!

The play was good, although I did not enjoy it as much as Oleanna, more because of the writing than the acting. Race has four fantastic actors: Kerry Washington, Richard Thomas (from the Waltons!), David Alan Grier (from In Living Color), and James Spader (from one of my favorite 80s movies, Pretty in Pink). The acting was incredible. The four cast members played off of each other extremely well.

We had seats in the rear mezzanine, which was far away, but I could still see all the action. When the curtain dropped after the first act I couldn’t believe how quickly the time flew by. The second and third acts were equally short. The thing about a Mamet play is that there is always so much to discuss after. I recommend planning to have coffee or dinner with your friends after the show just to talk about the issues. It is never clear what actually happened in a Mamet play and you will want to discuss it with other people.

Race was extended, but you only have a few more weeks to go and see it, so get tickets soon!
