Nice Guy Johnny at Tribeca Film Festival

The Tribeca Film Festival is in town this week and I went to see a matinee of Ed Burns‘ new flick, Nice Guy Johnny. I love the TFF because it brings interesting, independent films to the area and you get to see a lot of celebrities too!

The festival has been around for several years now and it is much harder to get tickets than it was when it first started. You can buy an all access pass early on, but unless you have a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket or you are in the industry this probably isn’t a realistic plan. Tickets go on sale early to people who live in the Tribeca zip code and to American Express holders. I recently got an AmEx (I love that you get Jetblue points for spending money) so I was able to lock in tickets early.

I specifically picked Burns’ movie because I saw his film Purple Violets at the fest a couple years ago and I LOVED it. His movies are usually all talk and they take place in NYC. I am a big fan of his witty writing. Nice Guy Johnny did not disappoint. While I didn’t love it as much as Purple Violets, I did laugh a lot and so did the audience. Burns and two of the unknown stars of the film were there and participated in a Q and A after the show. It is always fun to see celebrities unexpectedly and Burns is very intelligent about the business.

The Tribeca Film Festival is a great deal, although I wish that they didn’t charge an additional $3 bucks to print out my own ticket. (Really TFF, why are you charging me to use my own printer? I don’t understand.) But the matinee ticket was pretty cheap. It was a great way to spend a chilly afternoon in the Village. The festival goes on until May 2 and if you miss it this year it will be back next April!
