Cirque du Soleil – OVO

Cirque du Soleil’s OVO premiered on Randall’s Island last night and I sat in the second row. I had never seen a Cirque show before so I was excited to finally see what all the talk was about. I have to admit, I was pretty impressed.

The show is a combination of acrobatics and artistry and dance. There is only a minor plot where a mystery egg is fought over by insects but the plot is not why you go to see the show. The costumes and makeup are outstanding and the performers move as if they really are insects. I was impressed that even the live band was dressed as insects and helped transport the audience to this make-believe world. The best part of the show is when the performers show off their acrobatic skills. Performers swing around on a rope about twenty feet overhead and there is an amazing tightrope act, but my favorite act involved trampolines. Performers dressed as bugs jumped up and down a giant rock climbing wall and across the stage. It was truly an amazing performance and every one seemed impressed.

Randall’s Island seems hard to get to, but there is a water taxi from several points in Manhattan and Brooklyn that will take you there and a city bus also stops at Randall’s Island. The show takes place in an actual big top tent, but it is well heated and protected from the elements. The big top is not very big, so even the seats in the back are not far from the stage.

OVO is a great show for all ages. The kids behind me were as wowed as I was. Everyone in the audience was enraptured while the performers took greater and greater risks. It is a great combination of sport, dance and art.
