Next Fall on Broadway
Go see this play. If you get nothing else out of this post, know you should see this play. Next Fall at the Helen Hayes theater is amazing and I hope it wins many Tonys. I got a ticket to the matinee this week after reading fabulous reviews from both the New York Times and Time Out New York. I was intrigued by a play that both agreed on since I don’t feel like they usually agree on much. I got a $40 ticket from the LunchTix program, and I sat in the fourth row of the mezzanine.
The play is produced by Elton John, but that is where the celebrity name dropping stops. Too many Broadway shows have been relying on the power of the big name rather than on good acting and writing (see my review of Bye Bye Birdie for an example). I hope this play is the beginning of the end of that practice. The cast is made of up five people all of which have had small parts like the little sister in the John Hughes movie Some Kind of Wonderful (Maddie Corman), Dr. Bradley Meiko from Sex and the City (Patrick Breen) and Lord Byron from Gossip Girl (Patrick Heusinger). This cast was phenomenal and I could feel their energy even from the back of the theater.
The script is also amazing. The plot is serious but there are so many funny parts and lines that make you laugh out loud. I didn’t realize how much the story got to me until the lights dimmed at the end. I wasn’t ready to leave the characters after two hours, I wanted more. I hope to go back again and sit up close so I can see the actor’s expressions and mannerisms better. It was a wonderful experience that I want to relive again!
