Time Stands Still on Broadway

During our most recent major snowstorm I had matinee tickets to see Time Stands Still at the Friedman Theatre. I was super excited for this show, mostly because of its outstanding cast. I was a little bummed to have tickets during the snowstorm, though, because there were so many other fabulous deals that day because everyone stayed home due to weather.

Still, I braved the blizzard and went to see Laura Linney, Eric Bogosian, Brian D’arcy James and Alicia Silverstone in this two act drama. The plot revolves around Laura Linney’s character, a photographer who has just returned from the front lines with massive injuries. She and her writer-boyfriend (played by Brian) cope with her return. Eric plays a longtime friend of the couple and Alicia plays Eric’s new girlfriend who is clearly much younger and very different from the other three.

I usually find it hard to stay engaged with such a small cast and such a small set, but I had no trouble at this play. Laura Linney could have carried the entire show by herself with her fabulous acting. The two gentlemen actors were just icing on the cake. Alicia Silverstone demonstrated that she still had the tremendous comic ability that was first seen in Clueless. Although her part was the smallest of the four, she never failed to get a laugh. I do wish she wouldn’t try to sell her book in the playbill notes, however.

I do wish I had gotten to sit closer to the stage because I could only see Linney’s injuries only slightly and I felt I would have been more affected by them had I been close enough to see the make-up and her facial expressions while she maneuvered around the set. This show got good reviews in both Time Out New York and The New York Times and they were well deserved. I would definitely try to see it before it leaves in mid March.
