The Greenwich Village Literary Pub Crawl

I went to my very first pub crawl this weekend. The Greenwich Village Literary Pub Crawl takes place every Saturday and meanders throughout the streets once haunted by famous poets and authors. I got my ticket from Living Social Network so it was only $10, instead of the usual $20. I was really excited for this event because I love all things literary. Authors fascinate me and I love to learn about their lives and see where they lived and where they drank. This tour gave me lots of new information and I had a lot of fun drinking my way through the village as well.

The first stop on the tour is The White Horse Tavern where Dylan Thomas drank himself to death. After kicking things off there we wandered to Kettle of Fish which has changed names several times in the past but is linked to Jack Kerouac. Finally, we ended the tour at Marie’s Crisis Cafe. In between each bar stop where we got to warm up and have a drink, we wandered the streets seeing things like where Edna St. Vincent Millay lived in the village and what was formerly (and hopefully will reopen as) Chumley’s. The guides told a great story about how the term “eighty-sixed” came into fashion in the restaurant world. There was even a brief and unplanned celebrity sighting when Hugh Dancy walked past the tour.

All in all, this was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The tour guides were smart and entertaining. Just as we started to get cold we were led into another drinking spot to warm up. The crowd on the tour was about twenty people and had single and groups. It would be a great way to meet people too. I definitely recommend checking this out even if you are a native New Yorker who thinks he knows it all. You will still have a great time.
