One if by Land, Two if by Sea

The beginning of February is Restaurant Week in New York City.  Restaurant Week gives the average guy or gal a chance to eat at a very expensive restaurant for a somewhat reasonable price.  I visited One if by Land, Two if by Sea as part of this great deal.  The restaurant has been labeled “the most romantic restaurant in the city” and I was excited to try it out with my honey.

I actually made reservations on line at the Restaurant Week site pretty far in advance, but I was surprised they worked so well.  I was sent an email confirmation immediately and the day before we were supposed to dine the restaurant called to make sure we were still coming.

We got there a little before our reservation thinking we might get a drink at the bar and take in the ambiance but they were ready to seat us right away.  We walked past the tuxedoed man playing piano in the window and two roaring fires (which was lovely on this freezing February night) and we were seated upstairs.  The ambiance upstairs was nice.  There was a single candle and a single red rose on each table.

I was pleased to learn that the menu at One if by Land is exclusively prix fix.  The regular menu was $78 a person and allowed the diner to choose from a few more options, but the options on the $35 restaurant week menu had some delicious choices too.  The service was perfect.  We never felt rushed but someone always checked on us to make sure we had what we needed.  The food was very good.  This restaurant knows how to do prix fix, clearly, and they prepared the cheaper meals well too.

All in all it was a success.  If we could afford to eat there regularly we might visit it again.  We will at least go back to enjoy the warm bar and have a drink.  One if by Land, along with most of the other Restaurant Week restaurants have extended the cheaper menus through the end of February so if you didn’t make it out in the first week, you still have some time to try out a new place.
