The Big Apple in Six Words at 92Y
Last night I attended a unique literary evening at the 92Y. The theme of the evening was six word memoirs. SMITH Magazine has been exploring the idea of six word memoirs for some time. They have compiled several books with this theme, getting celebrities, authors, teens, and plain janes to contribute his or her six word memoir.
Last night at the 92Y two SMITH magazine team members and several authors came together to talk about six word memoirs. The authors included Amy Sohn, A.J. Jacobs, and Ben Yagoda. (I should mention that I got the ticket with a discount that Amy Sohn sent out on Twitter. I love following authors on Twitter!) They discussed their personal six word memoirs as well as the ones they were asked to write about New York City and for celebrities. (Amy Sohn wrote one for Tiger Woods that was “Shouldn’t have hit that fire hydrant.” The group had a really great dynamic. The show included video and song as well as an audience participation portion at the end when anyone in the audience could get up to read his or her memoir. When the final audience member stood up and said “Born a boy, raised as a girl” and the room was silent. We all wanted to hear the rest of that story!
All in all, this was a great event to get you inspired and thinking creatively. I had thought up a Six Word Memoir for New York prior to the event (Ten million people can’t be wrong) and thought up a personal memoir which I submitted to the SMITH magazine website. Think about how to sum up your life in six words. It is challenging, but fun. If you have a good one, submit it to the SMITH magazine website and you just might be published in the next book!

I would also like to add that the Six Word Memoirs: Love and Heartbreak would be a great Valentine gift for those of us who have some slightly cynical friends…
