New Year’s in New York with 200 Cigarettes
We watch 200 Cigarettes almost every year around New Year’s. It is a great, little-known, independent movie that takes place in New York City in the early 1980s. The entire movie is set on New Year’s Eve in the city. The movie has some great shots of the City and it is fun to picture what the East Village was like back in the early 80s. It has a great ensemble cast including Ben Affleck, Kate Hudson, Paul Rudd and Christina Ricci. Various cast members wander the city not wanting to arrive to early for a New Year’s party. They hang out in bars and restaurants and interact with each other throughout the night and none of them wants to wake up alone on New Year’s Day.
This is a great way to spend New Year’s when you live in Midtown Manhattan. The crowds around Times Square get so backed up and the traffic is so ridiculous that you really don’t want to leave your apartment most years. Since we have the whole year to be out and about in the greatest city in the world, this New Year’s flick is a great way to gather energy and prepare for another fabulous year. Check it out the next time you are feeling bored or next New Year’s Eve when you just can’t brave the crowds.
