Wishful Drinking at Studio 54
Roundabout Theater Company has been putting on a really interesting, eclectic group of shows over the past few months. I was not overly impressed with Bye Bye Birdie, but I loved The Understudy. The company seems to better when it takes on less traditional plays and musicals. I was not disappointed with Wishful Drinking.
Carrie Fisher’s Wishful Drinking is a one woman show where Carrie Fisher basically talks to the audience about her crazy life, her crazy parents, her alcoholism and her mental illness. She captured the audience right from the opening bit and everyone was afraid to look away because of what you might miss. Carrie Fisher is inspiring because she puts it all out there, flaws and all, and this encourages others to do this too. She was hilarious and we laughed throughout the entire show. I highly recommend seeing this great show before it closes on January 13, 2010. If you don’t make it to the show, you can buy the book, which I haven’t read yet, but I imagine it is also pretty great.
As another positive note, we learned of Studio 54′s cancellation policy, which is pretty awesome. We had to miss the show we had purchased tickets for because we went out of town. Initially, we were thinking we would just pay another $20 for tickets through the HipTix program, but when my husband called the theater told us that if we called the morning of the day we wanted to see the show they would give us tickets if they weren’t sold out. We called on Monday and showed up. We were given general admission tickets. We waited with a few others who had canceled because of the recent snowstorm. Five minutes prior to the show we were escorted to seats where no one was seated. We got to sit sixth row center! It was an even better seat than what we had bought. I wouldn’t recommend this if a show is consistently sold out, but Studio 54′s cancellation policy really ended up working out for us!
