Dream Role at 92Y Tribeca

Dream Role!Last night I went to see Dream Role at 92Y Tribeca. While I have seen movies at 92Y Tribeca in the past, this was my first theater event there. The space for theater was next to the screening room. There were a lot of tables set up and a bar in back. It was a very welcoming atmosphere. I still love that you can buy food and drink and bring it in to watch the shows. It really is one of my favorite places to go for movies and shows.

Dream Role is a monthly showcase at 92Y Tribeca. Three lovely ladies Sara Jo Allocco, Glennis McMurray, and Katina Corrao, are the hosts who I believe appear at every show (although I have only seen the one). They bring in other performers from the New York theater scene to perform with them. Each performer gets to choose his or her “dream role” and perform a number or monologue and thus realize his or her dream. Last night featured Stephanie D’Abruzzo from Avenue Q and Greta Lee from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee along with others. It is a little bit musical theater and a little bit comedy.

One of my favorite features of the show was the little factoids that were read prior to each number. I had no idea that Judy Garland refused to sing a depressing line in “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” in the movie Meet Me in St. Louis. Apparently the line is supposed to go “Have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last.” Nor did I know that Matt Dillon was in the video for one of my holiday favorites, Fairytale of New York (performed last night by Glennis McMurray and Matt McCarthy). Thanks to Dream Role I am now that much smarter! All of the cast seemed to be having a good time, which made the audience have fun too.

All in all it is a really interesting idea for a variety show. I think it is still in its early stages as they have only had a few shows that I know of. I am really excited to see where it goes in the future and I would recommend taking people who want a real New York theater experience. If nothing else, it will get you thinking about what your personal dream role is!
