Imogen Heap at Webster Hall
Last night I attended Imogen Heap‘s sold out show at Webster Hall. It was amazing. I bought tickets a long time ago and was glad that I paid the stupid ticket fees because the show sold out shortly thereafter. I have been a fan of Imogen since she was in the band Frou Frou. I got to see her do one song live when I went to a taping of David Letterman and I thought all of her songs would be pretty impressive live.
Imogen has a slightly electronic sound, but it is not techno-y at all, which is good in my book. She appeals to a pretty wide audience and I went with a very old friend from grade school who works in the music business and a couple other girls. We got there just as Imogen took the stage, around 9:30. The stage was arranged in a very appealing way. There was a large white tree assembled in the center of the stage with several instruments hanging off of it including a cymbal and a chain of bells. In front of the tree was a clear piano (very neat looking) and on either side were band members playing various electronic and regular instruments.
Imogen seemed to be having a great time, especially when she announced after a couple of songs that she just learned she had been nominated for two Grammy’s. She told very amusing anecdotes in between her songs, one of them being about how the song Aha! was about a date she had with man who told her he was a vegan so she prepared him a special meal. At the end of the meal the man ate a biscuit (cookie) which had both wheat and dairy in it. When she questioned him about it he said, “it’s just a biscuit.” I don’t think she took too kindly to this philosophy.
Imogen put on a great show with an amazing look and an amazing sound. Watching her recreate the many sounds in her songs was inspiring. She said she was coming back to New York City in April and I can’t wait to see her then!
