Paul Auster and Javier Marias at 92Y
I had a literary evening last night and went to see two brilliant writers, Paul Auster and Javier Marias, at the 92Y. I had been to the 92Y Tribeca earlier in the week to see movies, but the reading was at 92Y’s larger space on the Upper East Side. I have been to a couple of readings before at 92Y mainly because they often get some really big names in the writing world. Last night was no exception.
I have read several of Paul Auster’s books and I usually find his stories really intriguing. I love that he usually sets his books in New York City because I love reading what others have to say about this fabulous place. I have yet to read his new one, but the short excerpt he read from it had the audience on the edge of their seat waiting for his every word. I had never heard of Javier Marias before but from the introduction I learned that he is very big internationally. The wonderful introduction will have me looking out for his books in the future.
Auster and Marias had some similarities which must have led the smart people at 92Y to pair them together. I learned that both had been translators in the past and both spoke about this briefly. After each author was introduced and read a portion of his work, there was a question and answer period with both on stage. The questions came from index cards the audience members passed forward and the staff at 92Y screened the questions and picked some really interesting ones. Q & A is my favorite part of the evening because the personalities of the writers can really come out. 92Y has a reception after this where books are available to buy and author’s generally stay and sign copies, but I didn’t stay for the reception last night.
All in all it was a very interesting and literary evening for a very reasonable price. Tickets to readings are $15 generally, but if you are under 35 (which I am) if you buy early enough you can get tickets for only $10 a piece. Well worth the money spent, my friend and I had a great evening talking books and hearing from some of the greats.
