Independent Bookstore Photo Scavenger Hunt
This week is independent bookstore week in New York City. In addition to many author readings and activities at bookstores throughout the city, there is also a photo Scavenger Hunt! Photo scavenger hunts are great because you can take the pictures on your own time, and in today’s digital age it is easy to upload them and submit them for viewing. This is an amazing FREE way to see interesting parts of the City… I am even planning on venturing to Brooklyn for it!
Today I went up to three stores on the Upper West Side: Book Culture, Book Culture on Broadway and Bank Street Bookstore. I had never been to the first two, and I had only been to Bank Street many years ago when I was a teacher. It was great to see what the stores have to offer. I chatted with a couple of the store clerks who had no idea that the scavenger hunt was even going on… maybe that is because it is early in the week so word has yet to get around.
As for the stores themselves, I really loved both Book Cultures and could see myself going back to shop at them. Book Culture has a great used book selection upstairs with a lot of college reading because it is so close to Columbia. Bank Street Bookstore is a store “for Children, Parents and Teachers”. I am none of those things, but I can see why all three groups are pleased with the store. I am going to get some of the books mentioned at last week’s Happy Ending Series and get all my holiday shopping done by the end of the hunt next week because everyone loves books!
Stay tuned to this post for more hunting, and feel free to give me some competition if you are looking for something to do this week!
UPDATE 12/7/09: I won the photo scavenger hunt! YAY! I had a fabulous time traveling around the city and checking out the many unique bookstores. You can see some of my pictures here.

What a great idea! I would so love to do that. Did you photograph the book stores?
