Video Games Live at the Beacon Theater

Video Games LiveI took my husband to see Video Games Live at the Beacon Theater recently. He had requested tickets for his birthday. I am not a big video game fan (although I have been known to play my pink Gameboy on occasion). This seemed like an interesting event nonetheless and it turned out to be quite entertaining!

The Beacon Theater was sold out and full of gamers and their significant others. A live orchestra was on stage along with the Tufts Concert Choir. Three video screens were set up behind everyone. We had seats in the lower balcony and although our view of the video screens was slightly blocked, the people with seats on either end had completely obstructed views of the screens and many of them complained. If you are planning on going to this event in the future (it is touring the country as far as I know) try to get seats in the middle.

The show consisted of two acts and about fifteen numbers. The orchestra played the music from popular video games while the screens showed highlights of the games. My favorite numbers of the evening were Mario Brothers (one of the few games I played relentlessly when I was young) and the Guitar Hero piece. For the Guitar Hero piece a contest winner was invited on stage to play the game while the orchestra played the song in the background. It was pretty impressive. The lighting was one of my favorite parts of the show. The tricks of light were so well done that often you felt like you were inside the video game. I like that even though I didn’t know most of the games that were featured.

If you are a gaming fan, or know someone who is, you would be served well to enjoy this unique event that encourages gamers to get out and socialize. They can even bring their games with them! A fair number of people in the audience had Gameboys and other devices. The messaging that was going back and forth between them looked like a lot of fun too!
