Gotham Girls Roller Derby Bout

Last night I attended my first Roller Derby Bout. After seeing and LOVING the movie Whip It, I decided I needed to see this sport in action. After googling New York Roller Derby I learned that NYC has its own group, the Gotham Girls Roller Derby, that consists of 4 teams (one for Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Manhattan). Last night was a showcase double header bout between first the Brooklyn Bombshells and the Rat City Rollergirls (from Seattle) and then the Queens of Pain against the same Rat City team.

I bought VIP seats for an extra 10 bucks. VIP meant I got to sit on the track during the bout and that I also got a nifty gift bag with some great little treats. The bout was sold out (no doubt due to the popularity of Whip It) and there were a lot of first timers in the audience. The sport was played on a flat track, which was different from the movie, but that didn’t keep the bouts from being action packed. Sitting on the track was awesome, but not for the faint of heart. The girls ran into me a couple times during the bout and I think I even left with a bruise. But I loved being in the middle of all the action.

We had a great time before the bout even started reading all of the great names the girls had created for themselves. Some of the most memorable were Stevie Kicks (whose number was edge of 17), Hyper Linx (whose number was 404) and Moe Yadown. All the girls were super tough and seemed to be having a great time.

For me the highlight of the bout came during the second match up when Suzy Hotrod, from Queens of Pain (my personal favorite girl from the Queens team) scored a massive set of points on the Rat City gals. Unfortunately, it was not enough to catch up to the Rat City lead. The Rat City girls kicked New York’s but last night but I still enjoyed watching. There is a championship match up in November between the Bronx and Manhattan… it is sure to be great entertainment!
