Secret Bon Jovi Concert

Yesterday a friend of mine asked if I was still available during the day. I said yes and she invited me to come with her to see Bon Jovi! This is really random for me, as I have never been a huge Bon Jovi fan, but I enjoy his music and who doesn’t love Livin’ on a Prayer? I figured this adventure was meant to happen and I told her to sign me up.

We took the bus from Port Authority to the new Meadowlands Sports Complex. I had taken a bus to the old Giant’s Stadium in the past, but I wasn’t sure how the bus would work for an event that was supposed to be small and “secret.” We didn’t take a bus that went directly there, but rather got off about half a mile away. Normally, the short walk would be cake for a Manhattan dweller, but as a warning to all of you who have never been, New Jersey does not have a lot of sidewalks. We ended up walking along the freeway with another group of adventurers. Luckily we all made it to the arena unharmed! We found a bus right at the arena for the way home so the danger walk was avoided.

We waited outside online for about an hour and a half. It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed soaking up the sun and people watching… Bon Jovi fans still seem to have a certain look and many girls apparently still think it is the 80s if you ask their hairstyles! They let us through the gates around 11:30 in the morning where I learned a little more about what I signed up for.

Bon Jovi’s Secret concert was sponsored by WPLJ, a decent, pop NYC radio station. The only way to get tickets was to win them. The concert took place in the parking lot of the new Meadowlands Sports Complex as they are still building the Complex. Many of the construction workers took a long lunch to enjoy the concert, which I thought was pretty cool.

Bon Jovi played only a handful of songs, but they were all his big hits, so I had no complaints. They announced that Bon Jovi would be opening the new Meadowlands with concerts on May 26 and May 27. They ended the show with Livin’ on a Prayer and I think it is physically impossible to not sing along when he says “You live for the fight when that’s all that you got.” So true, JBJ, so true…
