New York Views – Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

Nick & Norah's Infinite PlaylistNick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist first was a book for young adults written by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. It then became a movie starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings. Both the book and the film are set in New York City and both are worth a little attention.

I saw the movie before reading the book, which I don’t normally do. Usually I see the preview for a movie and read the book prior to seeing the film. I don’t know why I didn’t do that in this case, unless I was unaware that it was a book first. The story of both book and film revolves around a group of teenagers who go in search of a secret band performance somewhere in the city. They quickly lose one of the group and also end up searching for her. There is a lot of love, drinking and teen angst throughout as well.

I really enjoyed the use of New York City in the storyline though. The city becomes a virtual playground for these teenagers that is open all night. They visit Veselka, in the East Village, which I made a trip to recently because of its appearance in the story. They serve delicious pierogi and kielbasa. I am not sure I would have ever stumbled in were it not for its appearance in the movie.

I think it is worth seeing the film and reading the book if you are a fan of New York City because the book has different setting spots than the movie, and it is interesting to picture these characters all over New York. I love seeing other people’s versions of this City and this is a great portrayal. If you have a free afternoon, rent the movie and watch New York playout throughout the story.
