Story Pirates at Ars Nova
This review is slightly late in coming, but since the Story Pirates have another show coming up at Ars Nova on October 9th, I figured it wasn’t totally irrelevant. I went to see the Story Pirates After Dark a few weeks ago at Ars Nova. Leading up to the show I had no idea who the Story Pirates were, I just like to go to shows at Ars Nova, and I was free so off we went.
Turns out the Story Pirates are AWESOME! They are a combination of traveling theater troupe and creative writing teachers. For the majority of their time they travel to schools around the country and teach kids about creative writing. How do they do that, you may ask, and more importantly, why would I want to go see them at Ars Nova? Well, they teach creative writing by inspiring students write interesting stories. After the stories are written, the Story Pirates act out the kids’ stories and the kids get to see their writing in action.
The show at Ars Nova consisted of short skits and musicals that were written by actual kids in the program. A member of the cast would announce the writer’s name and age. The cast was amazing and talented. They committed to each of the skits and numbers with such enthusiasm that you could feel the energy in the room after the first number. The stories were amusing and endearing. The former teacher in me was so excited to learn that a group like the Story Pirates exists. I wish I wasn’t out of town for their show next week or I would be attending both shows that night!
