Rock of Ages at New World Stages

This week I went to see an awesome off-Broadway show, and I do mean AWESOME in every sense of the word.  Rock of Ages is a musical with music from the big hair bands of the 80s. It is playing at the New World Stages Theater.  The show is more than just the music, it does have a plot, albeit a fairly predictable one.  Anyone who has spent any length of time in the 80s should check this out just to hear the songs that you maybe haven’t heard since the 80s including songs by Pat Benatar, Bon Jovi and Journey, just to name a few.

Constantine, from American Idol history, is the current star of the show.  I was never a huge fan of his, but after seeing the show he grew on me.  He poked fun at the 80s and himself throughout the show and you found yourself laughing with the cast instead of at them.

One disappointment was the crowd that was there this particular evening.  It was someone’s 40th birthday and about twenty-five 30 to 40 something women were in the front two rows.  They had obviously had some drinks and they drew attention to themselves rather than to the show.  The drinks were free flowing throughout the show, and the show even offered waiters that brought the drinks to your seat with just the wave of a lighter-flashlight.

After the show we hung out in the theater’s bar and listened to others sing karaoke.  Sadly, none of the cast sang, but the bar had a great vibe and I would hang out there again sometime.  All in all it was a great night and I would recommend the show to anyone looking for some original, cheezy fun.
