Singer/Songwriter Sessions at The Bitter End
On a recent Sunday night I found myself in the Village for Singer/Songwriter night. Twelve singers were given about 20 minutes each to wow the crowd with their vocal and instrumental styles. I went at the request of a friend who was singing there that night. The cover was $5 – very cheap for a night out in NYC.
The Bitter End is a dive bar that has been around for a long time. Tons of classic acts have played there and their portraits are painted behind the bar. Some of the performers that you might be familiar with are Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, and Woody Allen. But don’t start to think that this place is big and fancy. It is a dive bar. It is a small bar with almost no beer on tap. It has a small stage. The audience sits close to the stage or at the bar and this gives the performances an intimate but laid back feel.
I liked the feel of this evening out. My favorite performer of the evening was, of course, the friend who asked me to come. I wasn’t overly impressed with a lot of the other performers. That being said, I liked feeling that the next person that took the stage could be the next Joni Mitchell and I would get to say I saw them when.
