Jeffery Self – People I Slept With Who Never Called Me Back

This was a perfect evening of comedy.  It was a one-man show starring Jeffery Self.  Jeffery found that he was wowing total strangers with amusing stories of his one-night stands and he figured… why not let everyone enjoy the fun?  He put on a brilliant show.  It was short and to the point and the audience laughed with him throughout all the right parts and some of the wrong ones.  At one point Jeffery told a story about how he met a friend outside of Duane Reade.  The audience laughed at the mention of Duane Reade and Jeffrey asked “Why are you laughing?  What’s funny about Duane Reade? Is it because you all know where one is?”  The audience did not respond, but just by listening to Jeffery’s stories, something about Duane Reade WAS funny.  The only explanation for this that I can think of is Jeffery’s charm.

This show was at one of my favorite spots, Ars Nova.  This show did not sell out at Ars Nova.  Although I am sure that Jeffery wishes that it did sell out, I am happy it didn’t.  When the space is less crowded the staff puts out little tables with fake candles.  These small changes make the vibe at Ars Nova feel more like a dive club rather than a performance space.  You really get the feeling that a place like this can only exist in fabulous New York City.
