Straight Up Vampire
On Friday night I went to one of my favorite venues, Ars Nova. They were putting on a little musical called Straight Up Vampire. NYC is so full of amazing theater opportunities. Whether you want to act in it or watch it, NYC is the place to be when it comes to live theater. Ars Nova is a 99 seat blackbox theater that hosts a variety of different events. In the past I have seen music, comedy, theater, and a combination of all three at this location.
Straight Up Vampire was a musical set in colonial times about vampires. The final clincher is that it is set to the music of Paula Abdul. For about an hour and a half I watched actors in colonial-like dress sing songs such as Forever Your Girl and Rush, Rush. Clearly this was a comedy. While it was not polished like a Broadway show, I think it is great to see theater in a form that is more raw. The actors had heart and made me laugh. This is the place where shows earn their chops before transferring to off-Broadway. You just don’t get this kind of theater on a regular basis outside of NYC.
Ars Nova is almost always cheap. The tickets at Ars Nova are almost never more expensive than $20, and this show was $20 a ticket. You should look into becoming an Ars Nova pass holder for an even better deal. Look for a future post on the wonders and benefits of becoming a pass holder.
Hopefully there will always be interesting, cheap theater in NYC. It is a great way to see upcoming shows before they hit it big and enjoy a truly unique experience.
