Lorraine O’Grady’s Art Opening

I went with a friend to an art opening in Chelsea last night.  I had never been to an art opening in a small gallery before and it was a lot of fun.  Although my friend knew the gallery’s owners, the opening appeared to be open to the public and was completely free!  The artist, Lorraine O’Grady, mingled with the other people there and had I known what to ask her I would have had a conversation with her.  The gallery even passed out glasses of wine while you viewed the artwork.

It was a small show, maybe twelve pieces.  They were photos of Ancient Egyptian sculptures juxtaposed with photos of the artist’s own family.  I was extremely impressed with the way the artist managed to capture photos of her family that seemed to exactly replicate the ancient sculpture. Unfortunately the pieces were way out of my price range, most of which were selling for $6,000, but that didn’t stop me from looking!

I am not very learned when it comes to art, but I appreciate any opportunity to expand my horizons and this certainly was that!  The gallery, Alexander Gray Associates, was beautiful and my friend and I were given a full tour.  This was something cheap and cultured to do on a weeknight.  All in all, it was a great sucess in my book even if I didn’t buy any of the art.
