Broadway Loves the 80s Volume 4

I went to the fourth installment of Broadway Loves the 80s. Most of the performers had taken the stage in a Broadway or off-Broadway show at some point.  Each performer sang a song that is associated with the 80s. The host for the evening was Mo Rocca, from VH-1 Best Week Ever fame, and performers included actors from Xanadu and The Producers.

The playlist included: The Right Stuff (originally by New Kids on the Block), Black Cat (originally by Janet Jackson), Kissing a Fool (originally by George Michael), Jesse’s Girl (originally by Rick Springfield), Pour Some Sugar on Me (originally by Def Lepperd), Sunglasses at Night (originally by Corey Hart), I Need a Hero (originally by Bonnie Tyler), and Walking on Sunshine (originally by Katrina and the Waves) along with other great hits.

This was a super fun show especially because the performers seemed to really enjoy the songs they chose. The performers were backed by a live band and most of them used the three back-up singers in their numbers, giving the songs a very professional and realistic sound.  Added details such as 80s attire, confetti, and glow necklaces added to the awesome 80s feel.  There was also a raffle and a couple fabulous prizes auctioned off at the end of the evening.  The attention grabbing item was a Teddy Ruxpin doll with original tapes.  The crew at the show had also trolled around Broadway stages and gotten over 300 Broadway stars to tell their favorite 80s memory on a tape that you could make Teddy tell as well.  Some of the proceeds went to charity, so I felt like I was doing something good for the community in addition to having a stellar time.

We reserved a table at Joe’s Pub in advance by calling prior to the show. Calling ahead is always a good idea at this venue. The staff was extremely friendly on the phone.  Someone from Joe’s Pub will call you back the day before the show to confirm your reservation.  There is a small minimum at each table, but they have decent food and snacks as well as delicious drinks. We were more comfortable than the people standing in the back by the bar and had a perfect view from our couch seats. Hopefully this will not be the last installment of this 80s extravaganza!
